FROM DELHI TO THE SACRED RIVER

Ayodhya, Varanasi and North India’s heritage

This Ayodhya Varanasi tour package from Delhi combines pilgrimage visits with architecture, neighbourhood walks and river life. The full Delhi–Lucknow–Ayodhya–Prayagraj–Varanasi–Agra route brings different traditions into one journey, finishing with the Taj Mahal before returning to the capital.

Begin in Delhi and continue to Lucknow’s Imambaras and gateways. In Ayodhya, plan visits to Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan. Prayagraj introduces the Triveni Sangam before three nights in Varanasi give time for the ghats, Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Ganga Aarti and Sarnath.

Highlights of the ten-day route

  • Old Delhi lanes and the capital’s historic landmarks.
  • Lucknow’s Awadhi architecture and time for local food.
  • Ayodhya temple visits and the Sarayu riverfront.
  • Prayagraj’s Sangam and a planned Varanasi boat outing.
  • Sarnath’s Buddhist heritage and Agra’s Taj Mahal.

A proposed sequence to confirm against transport schedules, monument closures and local access.

Nine-night hotel-based stay planDelhi 2 · Lucknow 1 · Ayodhya 1 · Prayagraj 1 · Varanasi 3 · Agra 1
DAY01

Arrive in Delhi

Arrival transfer · Overnight: Delhi

Meet at the agreed Delhi airport or railway station and transfer to your hotel. Depending on arrival time, begin with India Gate and an introduction to the capital. Humayun’s Tomb or Qutub Minar can be fitted into the available sightseeing time. Keep the first day flexible after your journey; early check-in depends on hotel policy.

DAY02

Explore Old and New Delhi

City sightseeing · Overnight: Delhi

Discover the Red Fort from outside, Jama Masjid, Raj Ghat and the lanes of Chandni Chowk. A cycle-rickshaw ride can be discussed separately. Continue with a drive past the government district and India Gate. Visit the Lotus Temple if open and time allows. Some sights require walking, security checks or separate entry tickets.

DAY03

Delhi to Lucknow

Flight or train as agreed · Overnight: Lucknow

Transfer for the booked Delhi–Lucknow flight or train. The service, fare, baggage allowance and arrival time must be confirmed in the quote. Meet the local team and check into your hotel. Use the time remaining for Bara Imambara, Rumi Darwaza and Chota Imambara; a later arrival may require a revised sightseeing plan. Enjoy a free evening for markets or Awadhi food.

DAY04

Lucknow to Ayodhya

Road transfer and temple visits · Overnight: Ayodhya

Travel to Ayodhya and visit Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Mandir, Hanuman Garhi and Kanak Bhawan according to access and available time. Allow for queues, security procedures and walking. The evening programme includes time by the Sarayu River for aarti when operating. Temple schedules and entry arrangements can change; confirm current requirements before departure.

DAY05

Ayodhya to Prayagraj

Road transfer and Sangam visit · Overnight: Prayagraj

Continue to Prayagraj and the Triveni Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet and Hindu tradition associates the Saraswati. Visit Anand Bhawan if open and view the historic fort from outside. Any Sangam boat outing is separate unless stated in your quote and depends on river conditions and permissions. Keep time for rest after the drive.

DAY06

Prayagraj to Varanasi

Road transfer and evening aarti · Overnight: Varanasi

Travel to Varanasi, check into your hotel and prepare for the evening Ganga Aarti at Dashashwamedh Ghat. Expect crowds and a walk through busy streets to reach the riverfront. The ceremony is a planned highlight, subject to local arrangements; reserved seating or viewing from a boat must be confirmed separately.

DAY07

Varanasi temples and river life

Morning boat outing and city visits · Overnight: Varanasi

Begin with the planned morning Ganga boat ride when river conditions and local permissions allow. Continue to Kashi Vishwanath Temple, Assi Ghat and the old-city lanes, following current entry rules. Later, explore silk-weaving areas or local markets at your pace. Darshan waiting times vary, and any official special-entry service requires separate confirmation.

DAY08

Sarnath excursion

Buddhist heritage near Varanasi · Overnight: Varanasi

Visit Sarnath for the Dhamek Stupa, archaeological remains and nearby monasteries. Include the Archaeological Museum when open. The museum has a Friday closure, so this excursion may swap with another Varanasi day. Return to the city with free time for the ghats, shopping or rest. Confirm site tickets and local guide arrangements in your quote.

DAY09

Varanasi to Agra

Pre-arranged rail or air-and-road routing · Overnight: Agra in hotel-based plan

Travel towards Agra using the connection agreed before booking. Do not assume a direct flight: an air itinerary may need onward road travel via Delhi. Train schedules also determine arrival time. The nine-hotel-night plan requires reaching Agra for a hotel stay. Choosing an overnight train changes the hotel-night count and the following morning’s programme; request a revised itinerary and price.

DAY10

Taj Mahal and return to Delhi

Monument visit and departure transfer

Visit the Taj Mahal on an open day, then return towards Delhi for the agreed airport, station or hotel drop. The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays; dates or sightseeing order must accommodate this. Agra Fort can be discussed if there is enough time before departure. Allow a generous buffer for the drive and any onward flight or train.

The final itinerary must confirm Delhi–Lucknow and Varanasi–Agra connections. An overnight train changes the accommodation plan. Agree the Taj Mahal visiting day and return-travel buffer before buying onward tickets.

MAKE SPACE FOR THE EXPERIENCE

Best time and practical travel advice

Best time to travel

October to March generally brings more comfortable weather for sightseeing in Varanasi and this North India circuit. Summer can be hot; monsoon river levels may affect boats and ghat access. Winter fog can disrupt transport, while major festivals can mean longer queues.

Read the official Varanasi travel guide and ask about conditions for your dates.

Closures and travel connections

The Taj Mahal is closed to general visitors on Fridays. Sarnath Archaeological Museum also has a Friday closure. Plan the sightseeing order around both.

Rail and air schedules determine the longer transfer days. Confirm actual services, fares and baggage rules. Check the official Taj Mahal visitor website before departure.

Temple visits and river outings

Follow temple security rules, dress respectfully and check restrictions on phones, bags and photography. Do not assume a booked tour grants special access or avoids queues.

River outings depend on permissions, water levels and weather. Follow the boat operator’s boarding instructions and use the safety equipment provided. Keep the riverfront clean and photograph rituals only where permitted.

Families and mobility needs

Old-city lanes, ghat steps, temple queues and boat boarding can require substantial walking or standing. Describe your needs before booking so the pace, hotels and assistance can be discussed.

Carry comfortable shoes, sun protection and suitable layers. Request hotel lift and vehicle access details, allow rest breaks and keep a buffer before onward travel.
