BEYOND THE FAMILIAR RIDGE

Explore the Seven Lakes Trek in the Dhauladhar

The Seven Lakes Trek takes you from the woodland above Dharamshala into a much wilder mountain landscape. After Triund and Laka Got, the route rises towards the high Dhauladhar crossings and continues through rocky basins around Nag Dal and Lam Dal. The return towards Kareri Lake brings another change of scenery before the descent to the foothill villages.

These lakes have deep cultural significance for local communities. Treat shrines and pilgrimage places with respect, keep the water clean and follow your leader’s guidance around campsites. The journey combines remote mountain walking with time beside some of the region’s best-known alpine lakes.

What makes this journey special

  • A seven-day traverse connecting the Triund side with the Kareri side of the Dhauladhar.
  • Forest trails, valley views, rocky crossings and changing lake landscapes.
  • Multi-day camping away from the road, with a return through Kareri Village.
  • Local guidance to understand the route, terrain and departure conditions.

Lake visits: Nag Dal, Lam Dal and Kareri Lake are the principal named stops in this itinerary. Other lakes in the Seven Lakes region may require detours. Ask for the exact lake-by-lake route before booking.

Compare this route with our guided Himalayan treks, or contact the team to discuss your experience. For regional background, see the official Kareri Lake visitor guide.

TRIUND · NAG DAL · LAM DAL · KARERI

Seven Lakes Trek itinerary: 7 days

A route from McLeod Ganj into the Dhauladhar lake region and back. Walking distances are approximate; camps and crossings depend on conditions.

DAY 01

Bhagsu Nag to Triund

Approx. 9 km · forest climb

Start from the Bhagsu Nag / McLeod Ganj area and climb through woodland towards the Triund ridge. The trail opens to views across the Kangra Valley and the Dhauladhar mountains. Meet your leader for a route briefing and settle into the agreed campsite.

DAY 02

Triund to Laka Got

Approx. 7 km · shorter preparation stage

Continue above Triund towards Laka Got, with a possible Khabrotu viewpoint detour if conditions allow. Use this shorter stage to settle into the walking rhythm before the high crossing. Snow cover in the Laka area varies through the year; follow the leader’s route and equipment advice.

DAY 03

Laka / Lahesh Cave approach to Nag Dal

Approx. 7 km · high pass crossing

Leave early for the climb via the Lahesh Cave approach and Indrahar Pass towards Nag Dal. Expect steep, uneven ground and a long mountain day. Snow, cloud and the group’s progress determine the crossing and campsite. Confirm the exact starting camp and required equipment in the departure briefing.

DAY 04

Nag Dal to Lam Dal

Approx. 7 km · rocky lake country

Traverse towards Lam Dal through the upper Dhauladhar lake region. Boulder fields and high ridges make steady footing and a controlled pace important. Camp in the permitted area selected by the leader. Additional lake viewpoints depend on the agreed route, time and access.

DAY 05

Lam Dal to Kareri Lake

Approx. 8 km · demanding crossing

Continue across rugged mountain terrain towards Kareri Lake. Allow a full walking day for the ascent, crossing and descent. The exact pass line and campsite depend on snow and local conditions. Follow the leader rather than treating this stage as an independent marked-trail walk.

DAY 06

Kareri Lake to Kareri Village

Approx. 10 km · woodland descent

Descend from the lake towards Kareri Village through changing forest and stream-side terrain. This remains a substantial walking stage after several days at altitude. Rest in the village at the accommodation or camp agreed for your departure.

DAY 07

Kareri Village to McLeod Ganj

Approx. 11 km · return stage

Follow the agreed walking route back towards McLeod Ganj through foothill villages and woodland. The trek finishes on arrival. Ask about an onward hotel night, transport or an alternative road transfer if needed; these must be confirmed separately.

The final agreed itinerary, campsite plan and written inclusions form the basis of your booking. Ask about contingency time for the high crossings and any extra hotel night after Day 7.

PREPARE FOR THE HIGH TRAILS

Best time, difficulty and package details

Best time and route access

The right departure depends on snow clearance, weather and access to the high passes. Early-season snow can require a different route or equipment; monsoon rain and low cloud can slow travel, and late-season snowfall can close crossings.

Ask which departure window suits the full traverse. Confirm the route before booking travel and allow flexibility afterwards. A broad calendar season cannot guarantee that every crossing is open.

Difficulty and preparation

This is a difficult trek with steep ascents, boulder fields and long descents above the forest line. Several consecutive days on foot and nights at altitude require endurance, confident footing and realistic pacing.

Build regular walking and hill experience before departure. Share your recent mountain routes with the team so they can discuss the itinerary and preparation.

What to confirm in your quote

Price is on request. Ask for a written breakdown of:

  • Guide support, camping and village accommodation.
  • Meals, water arrangements, tent and sleeping-equipment provision.
  • Meeting-point transfers and the final return arrangement.
  • Permits, luggage support and equipment requirements.
  • Personal expenses, contingency costs and cancellation terms.

Confirm whether pre-trek or post-trek hotel nights are included.

What to pack

  • Worn-in trekking boots, spare socks and layered clothing.
  • Warm jacket and waterproof outer layers.
  • Daypack, water bottles, headtorch and spare power.
  • Sun hat, sun protection and trekking poles if advised.
  • Personal toiletries, medication and requested identity documents.

Request the final kit list and confirm what the team supplies. Keep litter out of the lake basins and respect campsite instructions.
