A Himalayan journey with variety
Five days between monasteries and mountains
This Dharamshala itinerary for 5 days combines the Tibetan cultural life of McLeod Ganj with the landscapes of the Kangra Valley and a guided Triund trekking experience. Begin with temples, markets and craft workshops, then trade the town’s cafés for forest paths and a mountain campsite.
The standard plan includes three hotel nights and one camping night, with time to settle in before trekking and recover afterwards. Sightseeing can be adjusted around your arrival time, opening days and interests. Prefer shorter walks and a hotel every night? We can tailor the programme around you.

McLeod Ganj & Tibetan culture
Explore the temple area and local markets, with time for Tibetan food and a slower look at daily life.

Living craft traditions
Visit Norbulingka Institute and learn about the work of preserving Tibetan arts and craftsmanship.

A night outdoors
Walk towards Triund with a guide and camp at a location confirmed for the season and current permissions.
Your route, day by day
Dharamshala itinerary for 5 days
A balanced outline for your cultural tour and overnight trek. The order of visits and exact walking route may change with weather, access and your arrival or departure arrangements.
Arrive in Dharamshala & discover McLeod Ganj
Arrive at Gaggal Airport or your agreed meeting point and settle into your hotel. If your arrival time allows, explore the Dalai Lama Temple Complex at Tsuglagkhang and walk through McLeod Ganj’s market lanes. Pause for momos or thukpa, browse handicrafts, and ease into the mountain setting.
Temple access follows local arrangements. A temple visit does not include a meeting with the Dalai Lama or attendance at a teaching.
Overnight: hotel in McLeod Ganj.
Tibetan arts, monasteries & Dharamshala sights
Spend the day exploring the wider Dharamshala area. Visit Norbulingka Institute for its gardens, temple and Tibetan arts, and include Gyuto Monastery when open to visitors. On the upper-town portion of the route, see St. John in the Wilderness and Bhagsu Nag Temple.
A walk towards Bhagsu Waterfall can be included if the path and weather are suitable. We prioritise a comfortable pace rather than rushing every stop; workshop access, traffic and opening hours shape the day.
Overnight: hotel in McLeod Ganj.
Begin your guided Triund trekking experience
Meet your trekking guide, review the route and set off from the agreed trailhead around Bhagsu Nag or Gallu. Walk through forest and up rocky mountain paths, taking regular breaks as views open towards the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar range.
Allow much of the day for walking. Distance and duration depend on the starting point, overnight campsite, weather and group pace. The upper sections are steeper, so comfortable footwear and reasonable walking fitness matter.
Overnight: mountain campsite; location confirmed before travel.
Mountain morning & return to McLeod Ganj
Enjoy breakfast and the morning mountain scenery before descending along the agreed route. The guide will set a sensible pace on uneven ground. Return to your hotel, freshen up and keep the rest of the day relaxed, with cafés or market browsing if you wish.
The timing of the Triund viewpoint visit depends on the campsite and trail conditions. A Laka Glacier extension needs a separate plan and is not part of this standard return day.
Overnight: hotel in McLeod Ganj.
A gentle village walk & onward travel
If departure time permits, take a short walk through a nearby Himachali village or enjoy a quiet breakfast with mountain views. Village visits are respectful, everyday encounters; private home visits are only arranged with the hosts’ agreement.
Continue to Gaggal Airport or your agreed onward connection. Share your flight, train or road plans before booking so we can allow enough time for the transfer.
Tour ends in Dharamshala. Onward travel can be arranged on request.

Before you set off
Plan your Dharamshala trip
When to travel
March–June and September–November are popular windows for this mix of sightseeing and walking. Spring brings longer days; autumn often offers clearer mountain views, though no season guarantees clear skies.
Monsoon rain can disrupt roads and make trails slippery. Winter snow and ice can change or close the trekking route. A cultural tour with hotel stays may be a better fit when mountain conditions are unsuitable.
Getting to Dharamshala
Gaggal Airport serves the Dharamshala area. Pathankot is a common rail connection, followed by a road transfer. Road journeys from Delhi, Chandigarh and Amritsar require additional travel time outside the five-day programme.
Share your arrival details before booking. Hill traffic, road conditions and flight changes can affect transfer times.
Fitness & packing
Prepare for sustained uphill walking and a descent on uneven terrain. The trek is moderate and can feel demanding for someone unused to hills. Discuss your walking experience and any relevant limitations with us before confirming.
- Broken-in walking shoes with reliable grip.
- Warm layers, a windproof or waterproof jacket and spare socks.
- Daypack, refillable water bottle, sun protection and a hat.
- Headtorch, personal essentials and any prescribed medicines.
- A small amount of cash for personal purchases.
Carry out your litter, respect religious spaces and ask before photographing people. Your guide’s route and weather decisions take priority over reaching a viewpoint.

Dharamshala tour FAQs
Is five days enough for Dharamshala and Triund?
Five days allows time for McLeod Ganj, a cultural sightseeing day, a two-day trekking and camping experience, and departure. This itinerary starts and ends in Dharamshala; allow additional travel time from Delhi, Chandigarh or Amritsar.
How difficult is the Triund trek?
Expect a moderate mountain walk with sustained uphill sections, rocky steps and a long descent. It can suit active beginners who prepare for several hours of walking, but it is not an effortless stroll. Tell us about your fitness and previous walking experience so we can recommend an appropriate route and pace.
Is camping always at Triund Top?
The overnight campsite depends on current forest permissions, weather and operating conditions. Your confirmed plan will name the campsite and explain how the Triund walk fits around it. If camping or the trail is unavailable, we will discuss an alternative itinerary and any price changes.
What is included in the five-day package?
The standard plan includes three hotel nights, one camping night, hotel breakfasts, trek dinner and breakfast, a trekking guide, camping equipment, sightseeing and trek-start transport, required trekking permissions and applicable taxes. Check your written quotation for the exact arrangements and airport transfer details.
What is the best time to plan this trip?
March to June and September to November are commonly chosen for walking and sightseeing. Conditions vary each year: monsoon rain can affect roads and trails, while winter snow or ice may prevent the Triund trek. We review local conditions before confirming the trekking plan.
Can we do the tour without trekking or camping?
Yes. Ask for a hotel-based cultural itinerary with shorter walks instead of the overnight trek. The number of hotel nights, sightseeing programme and quotation will be adjusted to your preferences.
Can children, older travellers or solo travellers join?
Suitability depends on walking ability, interests and the chosen route rather than age alone. The standard package is based on a minimum of two travellers. Solo travellers can enquire about a private arrangement or available departures; group availability is not guaranteed.
Will we meet the Dalai Lama during the tour?
A visit to the Dalai Lama Temple Complex does not include a personal meeting or attendance at a teaching. Access and religious events follow their own schedules, and some areas may be restricted.
How much does the Dharamshala itinerary cost?
Prices are provided on request because travel dates, group size, hotel category, transport and campsite arrangements affect the total. Send your dates, number of travellers and preferred comfort level for an itemised quotation.
Can I add Laka Glacier or another destination?
Yes, with additional planning. Laka is a separate extension that adds walking time and depends on trail conditions; it is not included in the standard descent day. We can also discuss an onward journey to Amritsar or a longer Himachal itinerary.
