Dehradun Travel Guide

Discover a different side of Uttarakhand in the Doon Valley. Make time for museums, monastery grounds and local sightseeing, or use a comfortable city stay to begin a wider journey.

Find places to visit, a suggested two-day itinerary and practical planning details with Manu Adventures India.

Your Dehradun stay

01 · Explore the city

Choose heritage, a monastery visit or a gentle day of local sightseeing.

02 · Set your pace

Allow one or two full days, with time for meals, traffic and rest.

03 · Build the journey

Add Mussoorie or Rishikesh as a separately planned extension.

Plan your visit to Dehradun

Start with your arrival and departure points, then choose a few sights that fit comfortably between them. Dehradun can be a city break in its own right or a stop before the hills. Its valley setting means you should plan for city weather and traffic rather than expect a high-altitude mountain resort.

One full day

Choose two or three priorities in a practical route. Leave out a distant excursion if your visit is mainly an overnight stop between connections.

Two relaxed days

Split city attractions across two days, with a long lunch break and time to enjoy your hotel. Keep weather-dependent stops flexible.

A wider Uttarakhand trip

Discuss Mussoorie or Rishikesh as an extension with its own travel time. Avoid combining several destinations into one rushed arrival day.

Places to visit in Dehradun

Forest Research Institute

Consider FRI for its campus architecture and forestry museums. Confirm current visitor access, museum opening arrangements and any restrictions before planning the visit.

Mindrolling Monastery

Make time for this important Buddhist centre. Check which areas are open, follow dress and photography guidance, and respect prayer and teaching activity.

Robber’s Cave · Guchhupani

This natural stream-and-cave setting is a popular outing. Confirm access and water conditions locally. Wet surfaces and walking through water may make it unsuitable for some visitors.

Sahastradhara

Consider a separate visit to this waterside attraction when conditions suit. Check the actual access, crowd levels and suitability of any activity before going; optional tickets are separate unless agreed.

Tapkeshwar Temple

Add this cave temple if religious heritage interests you. Expect steps and uneven areas, follow footwear instructions and allow worshippers space.

City lanes & a meal stop

Leave room for a relaxed meal and a small part of the city rather than driving from stop to stop all day. Choose shopping or café time around the rest of your route.

Official visitor references: Uttarakhand Tourism’s Dehradun guide and the district administration’s Dehradun visitor page. Confirm access and operating arrangements directly before travel.

Best time to visit Dehradun

Choose dates around your interests and check the forecast when finalising outdoor plans. Weather in the valley differs from the higher hills, so pack for Dehradun itself as well as any onward destination.

March to June

Plan early outdoor visits and a sheltered afternoon break on warmer days. Carry sun protection and drinking water; temperatures in the city may feel very different from a hill destination.

July to September

Keep plans flexible during the monsoon. Heavy rain can affect streams, cave access and onward hill roads. Choose an alternative city stop if local conditions do not suit a waterside outing.

October to February

Consider autumn or winter for a city-focused visit, with layers for cool mornings and evenings. Check visibility and road conditions for any separate trip into the hills.

Suggested two-day Dehradun itinerary

This sample plan is a starting point for a customised visit. It is not a fixed departure or a package with automatic inclusions. Reorder stops around opening arrangements, the forecast and where you are staying.

Day 1 · Museums & city time

Begin with Forest Research Institute if visitor access permits. Leave time to explore the museums at a comfortable pace, then break for lunch. Choose a short city stop or Tapkeshwar Temple later in the day rather than adding a long drive. Keep the evening relaxed.

Day 2 · Monastery & one outing

Plan a respectful visit to Mindrolling Monastery when public areas are open. Depending on conditions and your interests, choose Robber’s Cave or Sahastradhara as a separate outing. Skip water-based stops if access or conditions are unsuitable, and leave a clear departure buffer.

Arriving late? Use the first evening for rest and start sightseeing the next day. Have another night? Ask about a Mussoorie or Rishikesh extension with its own schedule. An airport pickup and a full hill excursion should not be treated as interchangeable services.

How to reach Dehradun & plan transfers

Jolly Grant Airport

Jolly Grant serves Dehradun and the surrounding region. Check current flight services for your dates and allow time for the road journey to your hotel. Share the flight number, arrival time, luggage and passenger count when arranging a pickup.

Rail & road arrivals

Check current trains to Dehradun or suitable road connections before reserving your stay. Send the exact station or bus drop-off point to your driver. A city hotel transfer and an onward hill transfer require different planning and should be quoted clearly.

Getting around the city

A planned vehicle route can help link attractions spread across Dehradun. Discuss walking distances, steps, vehicle size and any access requirements before the day is confirmed. Leave time for traffic rather than building the schedule around the fastest possible drive.

Departures & onward travel

Confirm your train or flight before deciding the final day’s sightseeing. Allow a comfortable transfer buffer, particularly if returning from the hills. Agree pickup time and meeting point with your driver rather than relying on an assumed duration.

Accommodation, packing & trip costs

Choose a convenient base

Pick your hotel around the stops and connections that matter to you. Check exact location, parking, lift access, room type, bathroom arrangements and noise expectations before booking.

Pack for the actual itinerary

Bring comfortable shoes, sun protection and a seasonal layer. Add rain protection during wet periods. If a stream or cave visit is planned, discuss suitable footwear and access conditions locally.

Meals & respectful visits

Share dietary preferences in advance and confirm allergens with restaurants. Follow temple and monastery instructions, ask before photographing people and keep public spaces clean.

Request a personalised quote

Dates, traveller numbers, hotel category, room sharing, vehicle and guiding needs determine the cost. Add-ons such as a hill extension, entry tickets or optional activities may change the total. Ask for an itemised quote with named inclusions.

Confirm before payment: hotel and room type; meals; pickup and drop locations; vehicle; sightseeing stops; guide language; entry or activity fees; taxes; and optional services. Personal purchases, tips and anything outside the written itinerary should be budgeted separately unless specifically included.

Review our cancellation and refund policy alongside your booking-specific terms. For a tailored plan, send your dates, guest count, arrival details and preferences.

Dehradun travel FAQs

How many days should I spend in Dehradun?

One full day can cover a few priorities. Two days allow a more relaxed city visit, while separate hill or regional extensions need additional travel time.

What are the main places to visit?

Consider Forest Research Institute, Mindrolling Monastery, Tapkeshwar Temple, Robber’s Cave and Sahastradhara. Choose stops around current access, conditions and your interests.

Which airport serves Dehradun?

Jolly Grant Airport serves the city and surrounding region. Check current flights and arrange the onward road transfer to your actual hotel or destination.

Can Dehradun be combined with Mussoorie or Rishikesh?

Yes, either can form part of a wider itinerary. Plan the route, driving time and overnight stops separately rather than adding both to a short city visit.

Are Robber’s Cave and Sahastradhara suitable during heavy rain?

Check local access and conditions before travelling. Stream and waterside visits may need to be skipped when conditions are unsuitable; keep an alternative plan.

Is Dehradun a snow destination?

Do not plan a city stay around guaranteed snow. Dehradun is in the valley, and conditions differ from the higher hills. Snowfall on any onward trip depends on the weather.

Are tickets and guides included in a private tour?

Only when specifically listed in your written quote. Confirm transport, sightseeing, entry fees, meals and optional services before payment.

How do I request a customised Dehradun trip?

Share dates, traveller count, arrival and departure details, hotel preference and main interests through the enquiry page. We can discuss a practical plan and personalised quote.
