Places to visit in Shimla

Shimla combines colonial-era landmarks with hillside walks and nearby forest landscapes. Start in the central heritage area, then choose a few excursions that fit your pace.

The Ridge & Christ Church

Begin at the Ridge for an introduction to central Shimla and its skyline. Christ Church is one of the city’s best-known landmarks; respect worship and visitor arrangements when entering.

Mall Road & Lakkar Bazaar

Make time for a walk along Mall Road, with cafés, shops and historic façades along the way. Browse Lakkar Bazaar for wooden crafts and local souvenirs.

Jakhoo Hill

Visit the Hanuman temple on Jakhoo Hill and take in the hillside setting. The approach can involve steep walking; choose access arrangements that suit your mobility and keep belongings secure around monkeys.

Kufri

Plan a separate outing towards Kufri for hill scenery beyond the city. Check local conditions and individual attraction charges. Snow and winter activities depend on weather and are not guaranteed.

Naldehra & Shaily Peak

Explore the wooded surroundings of Naldehra, known for its golf course. Ask about suitable local walks; an outing towards Shaily Peak needs a route and timing matched to your ability.

Summer Hill & heritage

Consider Summer Hill and the heritage area around the former Viceregal Lodge. Confirm visitor access and guided-tour timings before arranging your day around a particular building.

Best time to visit Shimla

Spring & early summer

A popular period for sightseeing and walking, with a break from the heat of the plains. Holiday periods can be busy, so book accommodation and allow time for traffic.

Monsoon & autumn

Monsoon rain can affect roads and outdoor plans. Autumn often appeals for walking and sightseeing; check current conditions and keep flexibility in your itinerary.

Winter

Expect cold weather and the possibility of snow or ice. Choose a stay with suitable heating and confirm road access. A winter booking does not guarantee snowfall.

A relaxed 3-day Shimla itinerary

Use this as a starting point for a short stay. Allow additional travel time for arrival and departure, and adjust the walking to suit your group.

Day 1 · The heart of Shimla

Settle in, then explore the Ridge, Christ Church and Mall Road. Add Lakkar Bazaar if time allows, with breaks for cafés and viewpoints along the way.

Day 2 · Hills & heritage

Choose Jakhoo Hill and a heritage visit around the former Viceregal Lodge or Summer Hill. Confirm opening arrangements and leave time for the hillside journey.

Day 3 · Beyond the city

Choose an excursion towards Kufri or Naldehra, rather than rushing both into a busy day. Return with time to spare before an onward transfer.

Getting to Shimla & choosing your stay

By road, rail or air

Shimla can be reached by road from the plains, including the Chandigarh and Kalka area. Traffic, weather and hill roads affect journey times, so avoid tight connections.

The Kalka–Shimla Railway is part of UNESCO’s Mountain Railways of India listing. If you want the train journey as part of your trip, check the current timetable and reserve tickets separately from your main-line connection.

For air travel, check actual services to Shimla’s Jubbarhatti airport and onward transfers before booking. Do not assume a flight operates every day.

Where to stay

A central hotel can make heritage walks easier, while an outlying stay may offer a quieter setting. Confirm vehicle access, luggage assistance, steps and the walking distance from the drop-off point.

Useful travel tips

  • Wear comfortable shoes for hills, slopes and steps.
  • Pack layers and rain protection for changing weather.
  • Check opening times and entry charges for individual attractions.
  • Allow extra road time during weekends, holidays and poor weather.
  • Confirm winter heating and access with your accommodation.
  • Keep the city and forest paths clean, and respect religious sites.
