Legends of the Holy Bhagsunag Temple

According to Indian mythology, the story of Bhagsunag Temple goes back thousands of years. It is said that King Bhagsu once stole water from the sacred Nagdal Lake, which enraged the serpent god, Nag Devata. A great battle took place between the two, and although King Bhagsu was eventually defeated, he was later forgiven by Nag Devata. The site of this legend came to be known as Bhagsu Nag.

At the entrance of the ancient Shiva temple, visitors are greeted by a bell made of white tiles and a marble step that leads inside. Within the temple, you’ll find a five-faced Shivling and a small white idol of Nandi, the sacred bull. Surrounding the temple are two sacred pools, believed to hold magical healing powers.

A visit to the Bhagsunag Temple is not only a spiritual experience but also a chance to connect with the rich mythology and culture of Himachal Pradesh. Many pilgrims and travelers also take a dip in the holy pools for good luck and blessings.

Visiting Bhagsunag Temple – A Cultural & Spiritual Experience

The road leading to the Bhagsunag Temple is lined with vibrant shops selling wind chimes, dream catchers, handicrafts, and trendy hippie clothes, making the walk itself a fun and colorful experience. The temple is easily accessible by road and serves as the gateway to other attractions like the Bhagsu Waterfall and the famous Triund Trek.

One of the best times to visit is in September, when the annual Bhagsunag Fair takes place. This lively festival draws visitors from all over India, filling the temple with music, celebrations, and cultural traditions. Locals also believe that Radhasthmi is the most auspicious time to visit the temple, making it a spiritually significant occasion for devotees.

Whether you’re here for the mythology, the culture, or the adventure trails nearby, Bhagsunag Temple is a must-visit destination in Dharamshala.
