McLeod Ganj Travel Guide
Discover places to visit in McLeod Ganj, from the Dalai Lama Temple Complex and Bhagsu Nag to hillside cafés and the trails above Triund. Make room for both exploration and a slower mountain pace.

Welcome to upper Dharamshala
A small town with many ways to explore
McLeod Ganj, also written as Mcleodganj, sits above Dharamshala in Himachal Pradesh. Its Tibetan community, Buddhist institutions, busy market lanes and surrounding forests give the town a character distinct from a conventional hill-station break.
Come for cultural visits and cafés, a gentle walk around nearby villages, or a guided trek into the Dhauladhar mountains. Two days make a useful starting point for sightseeing; mountain treks deserve their own time and preparation.
Places to visit in McLeod Ganj

Local highlight
Dalai Lama Temple Complex
Visit Tsuglagkhang for an introduction to Tibetan Buddhist life. Follow posted rules, keep prayer spaces quiet and ask before taking photographs. A temple visit does not imply an audience with the Dalai Lama.

Local highlight
Bhagsu Nag & the waterfall
Explore the temple area and walk uphill towards Bhagsu Waterfall when conditions allow. Wet steps and rocks can be slippery; avoid fast-moving water and turn back if the route is unsafe.

Around town
Dal Lake & nearby forest walks
Pause by Dal Lake’s forested setting, or plan a separate walk through Dharamkot’s hillside lanes. Choose a route that matches your fitness, carry water and leave enough daylight for the return.
St John in the Wilderness
Visit this historic stone church for its architecture and deodar-forest setting. Check access and service times locally, and respect the quiet of the church and surrounding grounds.
Explore St John in the Wilderness →The Tibet Museum
Extend your cultural visit to the museum at Gangchen Kyishong in Dharamshala, near the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. It is a separate stop from Tsuglagkhang, not an attraction inside the temple complex.

Things to do beyond sightseeing
Tibetan food and cafés
Try momos, thukpa or tingmo at a local kitchen, then take a café break between walks. Ask about ingredients and dietary needs rather than assuming every dish suits your preferences.
Markets and local crafts
Browse the lanes around the centre and Jogibara Road for books, textiles and crafts. Ask about the origin of handmade pieces, shop respectfully and request permission before photographing people.
Time for reflection
Allow unhurried time around religious spaces. If you want a meditation or yoga programme, check the organiser’s current schedule and requirements in advance; casual sightseeing is not the same as joining a course.
A flexible starting point
A two-day McLeod Ganj itinerary
Day 1: Culture and town lanes
Begin with the temple complex, leaving time to observe visitor guidance. Follow with a Tibetan lunch, a walk through the market lanes and a café stop.
If opening arrangements and transport fit, add St John in the Wilderness or the Tibet Museum as a separate outing. Avoid filling every hour: steep lanes and traffic can make short distances take longer than expected.
Day 2: Bhagsu and the hills
Explore Bhagsu Nag early and continue towards the waterfall only if the path and weather are suitable. Choose a relaxed lunch and a short village or forest walk afterwards.
Alternatively, devote the day to a guided hike. Do not combine a full Triund ascent with a crowded sightseeing schedule. Add an overnight stay if you want a more relaxed trekking experience.
Treks near McLeod Ganj
Choose the route for your available time, fitness and current trail conditions—not just the photographs. Compare the full itineraries before booking.
Triund Trek
A forest climb to an open ridge with Dhauladhar and Kangra Valley views in clear weather. It requires proper walking shoes, water and time for the descent.
View the Triund itinerary →Laka Glacier Trek
Continue beyond Triund into higher, rockier terrain on a multi-day route. Snow is seasonal and may be absent; the name is not a guarantee of permanent ice.
Explore the Laka trek →Kareri Lake Trek
A separate mountain journey that needs its own transfer and itinerary. Do not treat Kareri Lake as a quick stop within a McLeod Ganj town walk.

Practical McLeod Ganj travel planning
When to visit
Spring and early summer are popular for walking and sightseeing. The post-monsoon period is another useful planning window. Rain can obscure views and make paths slippery; winter nights are cold, and snow higher up can affect trekking.
Check forecasts and local road and trail advice shortly before departure. A comfortable day in town does not establish that a mountain route is suitable.
Getting here
Plan your approach through Dharamshala. Kangra Airport and road connections from Pathankot are options, with onward transfers to your accommodation. Confirm current services and allow time for hill-road travel.
Choosing where to stay
The centre suits access to markets and the temple area. Bhagsu Nag and Dharamkot offer different village settings, but properties may involve steep lanes or steps. Ask about vehicle access, luggage assistance and the exact location before confirming.
What to bring
Pack comfortable shoes, layers, rain protection, sun protection and a reusable water bottle. Carry any personal medicines and a power bank. For trekking, ask for a route-specific equipment list.
Respect the place
Dress and behave respectfully at religious sites, follow photography rules and keep noise low. Carry litter back from walks and avoid entering fast-flowing streams or waterfall pools.

McLeod Ganj travel FAQs
Is McLeod Ganj the same as Dharamshala?
McLeod Ganj is the upper township of Dharamshala. Lower Dharamshala, McLeod Ganj, Bhagsu Nag and Dharamkot are different areas, so confirm the exact location of your accommodation and meeting point.
How many days should I spend in McLeod Ganj?
Allow two days for the town, temple complex, Bhagsu and nearby walks. Add separate days for Triund or a longer trek rather than squeezing mountain walking into a sightseeing day.
What is the best time to visit?
Spring, early summer and the post-monsoon months are popular planning windows. Monsoon brings rain and slippery paths; winter brings colder nights and possible disruption higher up. Check the forecast and local access before travel.
Can I meet the Dalai Lama during my visit?
A visit to the temple complex does not include a meeting or audience. Public teachings and events have their own schedules, registration and security requirements; check the official announcements separately.
Where is the Tibet Museum?
The Tibet Museum is at Gangchen Kyishong in Dharamshala, within the Central Tibetan Administration premises near the Library of Tibetan Works and Archives. Plan a separate visit and check its official visitor information.
Is Triund suitable for everyone?
Triund is a mountain trek with sustained climbing and uneven ground, not a flat sightseeing walk. Your fitness, footwear and the weather matter. Discuss the route with a guide if you are new to mountain walking.
Is McLeod Ganj a good base for families?
It can suit families who enjoy culture, food and short outings. Choose accommodation with suitable vehicle access and check steps and steep approaches in advance. Plan a gentle pace rather than assuming every attraction is easily accessible.
