A shikara on Dal Lake, Srinagar
Plan a Kashmir holiday that fits you
Choose a lakeside stay in Srinagar, a scenic circuit through Gulmarg and Pahalgam, or a separately planned mountain trek. Avoid squeezing every place into a short visit.
For a first visit
Five to seven days is a useful starting point for Srinagar and a few valley excursions. Your arrival times and preferred overnight stops shape the final itinerary.
For a slower holiday
Choose fewer bases and longer stays. Gardens, local food and lakefront time can make a rewarding trip without a new road journey every day.
For walking & adventure
Choose routes around your fitness and experience. Multi-day mountain treks need separate preparation, seasonal access checks and additional days.
Places to visit in Kashmir
Use Srinagar as a starting point, then choose excursions that fit your dates. Check current access and local arrangements before each outing.
Srinagar & Dal Lake
Explore the lakefront and consider a shikara ride or houseboat stay. Agree ride duration and cost before setting out. See our Srinagar travel guide for more city ideas.
Gulmarg
Visit for mountain scenery and seasonal activities. The Gondola needs separate ticket planning and depends on operating conditions. Snow activities require suitable instruction and confirmed availability.
Pahalgam & the valley
Allow time for Pahalgam and the Lidder Valley. Ask about access and local transport for Aru and Betaab Valley. Local excursions may need arrangements beyond your main transfer.
Sonamarg
Consider a mountain excursion or overnight stop when access permits. Leave time for the drive and confirm any walking, local transport or activity arrangements.
Mughal gardens
Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh are among Srinagar’s well-known gardens. Choose a few stops for a relaxed city day, with opening times and entry charges checked separately.
Culture, crafts & food
Make time for local markets, Kashmiri crafts and regional food. Ask before photographing people or religious spaces, discuss dietary needs and buy from sellers whose products and prices you understand.
Best time to visit Kashmir
Choose the season around your interests. Weather, flowering, snow cover and route access vary each year; the following are broad planning windows.
Spring · March–May
A popular window for gardens and the changing valley landscape. Flowering dates vary, so check actual garden opening periods before planning around them.
Summer · June–August
Often chosen for valley sightseeing and suitable open trekking routes. Higher trails still need route-specific checks, equipment and a separate itinerary.
Autumn · September–November
Plan for changing foliage, cooler weather and shorter days. Exact autumn colour and mountain visibility cannot be guaranteed.
Winter · December–February
Confirm heating, road access and appropriate transport. Snowfall, cable-car operation and winter sports conditions are not guaranteed.
A suggested 6-day Kashmir itinerary
This sample holiday starts and ends in Srinagar. Adjust it around your flights, season, walking ability and available access. It is a starting plan, not a fixed departure.
Day 1 · Arrive in Srinagar
Transfer to your hotel or houseboat and settle in. If time allows, enjoy a relaxed lakefront outing. Overnight in Srinagar.
Day 2 · Srinagar sights
Visit selected Mughal gardens and local sights. Add a shikara ride if you wish, with its duration and price agreed in advance. Overnight in Srinagar.
Day 3 · Gulmarg excursion
Visit Gulmarg, with Gondola tickets or other activities arranged separately unless included in your quote. Return to Srinagar or request a Gulmarg overnight.
Day 4 · Travel to Pahalgam
Journey to Pahalgam and explore at an easy pace. Select a local outing according to arrival time and access. Overnight in Pahalgam.
Day 5 · Valley & return
Allow time for a selected Pahalgam valley excursion, then return to Srinagar. Confirm local transport and entry charges in your itinerary. Overnight in Srinagar.
Day 6 · Departure
Transfer for your onward journey with a suitable reporting-time buffer. To include Sonamarg, add another day rather than shortening every stop.
Transport, accommodation & everyday details
Getting to Kashmir
For this itinerary, check flights to Srinagar and arrange the airport transfer. If arriving by rail or road, confirm current services, route access and the final transfer for your arrival point.
Avoid fixed assumptions about mountain drive times. Weather, traffic and local arrangements can affect the day. Keep a buffer before flights and important connections.
Sightseeing transport
Confirm which journeys your vehicle covers: airport transfers, day excursions and travel between overnight bases. Ask whether local sightseeing taxis, winter vehicles or boat rides must be arranged separately.
Food & packing
Share vegetarian preferences, allergies and other dietary needs before booking. Pack layers, comfortable footwear, photo ID and essential personal items. Carry some cash for smaller purchases.
Hotels & houseboats
Stay in Srinagar for city sightseeing and lake access, or add nights in Gulmarg and Pahalgam to reduce repeated day trips. Confirm hotel location, room category, meals and heating.
For a houseboat, ask about the exact location, access by boat or road, bathroom facilities, heating and included meals. A houseboat stay and a shikara sightseeing ride are separate arrangements unless your quote combines them.
Pace & accessibility
Tell us about mobility needs so walking distances, vehicles and accommodation can be planned appropriately. Allow time to settle in and avoid packing too many excursions into one day.
