THE TRAIL, AT A GLANCE

Why trek Kashmir’s Great Lakes?

The Kashmir Great Lakes Trek links a succession of mountain valleys, each with a different lake basin and a different view over the ridges. From Sonamarg, the route climbs through the Nichnai valley and continues towards Vishansar, Krishansar, Gadsar and Satsar. The final lake basin brings you to Gangabal and Nundkol beneath Mount Harmukh before the descent to Naranag.

This package gives the journey a wider travel frame: arrival in Delhi, flights to and from Srinagar, a preparation day at Sonamarg and six consecutive days on the trail. The published walking stages total approximately 70 km. It is a substantial high-altitude camping trek, with pass crossings and a long final descent.

What makes this route special

  • Changing lake landscapes, from the Vishansar basin to the Gangabal and Nundkol twin lakes.
  • Open alpine meadows, rocky ridgelines and views across Kashmir’s mountain country.
  • A point-to-point journey from Sonamarg to Naranag, rather than returning along the same trail.
  • Tented nights on the mountain route and hotel stops in Delhi and Srinagar.

Compare this journey with our other guided Himalayan treks, or ask the team which route suits your walking experience.

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek itinerary

11 days in total, including travel, preparation and six walking days. Distances, heights and timings are approximate.

DAY01

Arrive in Delhi

Arrival & hotel

Meet the team on arrival and transfer to your Delhi hotel. Use the afternoon to settle in and, if arrival time allows, explore the city. The original itinerary includes a welcome dinner; confirm the hotel, transfers and meal plan in your booking quote.

DAY02

Delhi to Srinagar

Flight & hotel

Transfer to Delhi airport for the scheduled flight to Srinagar. After arrival, transfer to your hotel and prepare for the mountain journey. Optional time around Dal Lake depends on your flight schedule. Confirm airfares and sightseeing arrangements separately.

DAY03

Srinagar to Sonamarg / Shitkadi

Approx. 3-hour drive · base camp 2,730 m

Drive through the Kashmir Valley to the Shitkadi base camp near Sonamarg. Meet your trek leader, review equipment and discuss the route. Spend the remaining day settling into camp and preparing for the first walking stage.

DAY04

Sonamarg to Nichnai

Approx. 9 km · 6.5 hours · camp 3,505 m

Start the climb from Sonamarg through forest and open mountain slopes. The Tabletop area opens up views towards the Thajiwas range before the trail enters the Nichnai valley. Follow the leader’s instructions on river crossings and continue to your first mountain campsite.

DAY05

Nichnai to Vishansar Valley

Approx. 13 km · 5.5 hours · camp 3,650 m

Walk towards Nichnai Pass and cross the ridgeline into the next valley. The climb includes steeper, rocky sections, followed by a descent into meadow country. Camp near the river in the Vishansar area, with lake exploration guided by the day’s conditions.

DAY06

Vishansar to Gadsar via Gadsar Pass

Approx. 14 km · 6 hours · pass 4,200 m

An early start gives time for the Vishansar and Krishansar lake area before the demanding climb to Gadsar Pass. Descend into the meadows towards Gadsar. The leader selects an appropriate permitted campsite; the pass crossing is one of the key high-altitude stages.

DAY07

Gadsar to Satsar

Approx. 12 km · 5 hours · camp 3,600 m

Climb out of the Gadsar area and continue across open grassland and rocky terrain towards Satsar. The lakes form a group rather than a single viewpoint. Which lake edges you reach depends on the path, time and local conditions.

DAY08

Satsar to Gangabal and Nundkol

Approx. 9 km · 5 hours · camp 3,587 m

Negotiate boulder sections and cross the Zaj / Zajibal ridge before descending towards the twin lakes beneath Mount Harmukh. Gangabal and Nundkol are separate lakes in the same valley. Take time to enjoy the setting without leaving the agreed trail.

DAY09

Gangabal to Naranag; drive to Srinagar

Approx. 13 km · 6.5 hours · Naranag 2,271 m

Leave the lake basin through meadows and forest towards Naranag. The long descent can be demanding on tired legs, so maintain a steady pace and use trekking poles if advised. Meet the vehicle at the roadhead and return to Srinagar for the night.

DAY10

Srinagar to Delhi

Airport transfer · flight · hotel

Transfer to Srinagar airport for the scheduled return flight to Delhi. Check in to your Delhi hotel. Actual flight times determine how much free time is available; confirm the flight and hotel arrangements with the team.

DAY11

Depart from Delhi

Onward journey

Spend any available time in Delhi before your onward airport transfer. Your departure flight determines the day’s timing. Confirm checkout, meals and transfer times in advance, and keep reasonable flexibility after the mountain portion of the trip.

Campsites, route timings and access may change with weather and local requirements. The final agreed itinerary and written inclusions form the basis of your booking.

PREPARE FOR THE MOUNTAINS

Best time, difficulty and package details

Best time to trek

The usual Kashmir Great Lakes trekking window runs from July to early September. Snow on the passes, rain and access conditions can affect individual departures. Meadows and lake surroundings change across the season, so choose your dates around route access and your available travel time.

Confirm the proposed departure before buying flights. Ask about contingency days and the effect of any route changes on your onward journey.

Fitness and altitude

Expect five to six-and-a-half hours of walking on the listed stages, with extra time for breaks and conditions. Long climbs, uneven ground and the descent to Naranag require endurance. Gadsar Pass reaches approximately 4,200 m.

Build up regular walking and hill experience before the trip. Share your recent trekking experience with the team so they can discuss suitability, pace and preparation.

YOUR TREK, EXPLAINED

Kashmir Great Lakes Trek FAQs

The practical details that help you choose dates, understand the route and prepare for your trip.

How long is the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek package?

This itinerary is 11 days and 10 nights from Delhi back to Delhi. It includes flights and road transfers in the schedule, a base-camp preparation day and six walking days between Sonamarg and Naranag. A shorter Srinagar-based arrangement can be discussed separately.

What is the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek distance?

The six walking stages listed here add up to approximately 70 km. Daily distances are estimates; campsite selection, access and conditions can change the total. The travel days in Delhi and Srinagar are separate from the walking distance.

How difficult is the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek?

Expect a moderate-to-challenging high-altitude trek with sustained walking, rocky pass crossings and a long final descent. The listed stages take roughly five to six-and-a-half hours before extra breaks. Previous trekking experience and preparation are helpful; discuss your recent walking experience with our team.

What is the maximum altitude on this itinerary?

The itinerary crosses Gadsar Pass at approximately 4,200 m. Camp heights and pass measurements are approximate. The Sonamarg base-camp day gives time for briefing and a gradual start, but altitude still affects each person differently.

When is the best time for the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek?

The usual trekking window is July to early September. Snowmelt, weather, access permissions and local conditions determine whether a particular departure can operate. Ask our team to confirm the proposed route and dates before arranging travel.

Which lakes are visited on the route?

The route passes the Vishansar and Krishansar area, Gadsar, the Satsar lake group, and the Gangabal and Nundkol twin lakes. Exact lakeside access and walking order depend on conditions and the trek leader’s route plan.

What does the Kashmir Great Lakes Trek package cost?

The price is available on request. Share your dates, group size and preferred travel arrangements for a written quotation. Confirm hotel and camp accommodation, meals, guides, transfers, flights, permits and equipment in that quotation before booking.

Are flights between Delhi and Srinagar included?

The itinerary schedules Delhi–Srinagar and Srinagar–Delhi flights, but a flight appearing in the schedule does not confirm that its fare is included. Ask for flight inclusions, baggage limits and booking responsibilities in your written quote.

Can I join from Srinagar instead of Delhi?

A Srinagar-based joining arrangement can be discussed with the team. It changes the overall trip duration, airport transfers and inclusions, so request a revised itinerary and quotation rather than assuming the Delhi package applies.

What accommodation and equipment should I expect?

The itinerary uses hotels in Delhi and Srinagar and tented camps on the mountain route. Confirm room and tent sharing, sleeping bags, mats, toilet arrangements and luggage support with the team. Bring worn-in trekking boots, layered clothing, rain protection and a headtorch; request the final kit list before departure.

What happens if the weather or access changes?

The trek leader may change camps, timings or the route when conditions require it. Confirm contingency arrangements, extra-day costs and cancellation terms before booking. Keep onward travel flexible enough for the mountain itinerary.
