DHARAMSHALA & MCLEOD GANJ
Use a gentle first day to understand the town, enjoy its food and culture, and decide which longer outings fit the rest of your stay.

Start with the streets around the main square and Temple Road. Browse slowly, notice where your hotel sits in relation to the town and leave time for a drink. McLeod Ganj’s slopes can make a small map distance feel longer than expected.
Include the Tsuglagkhang area when visitor access allows. Follow security instructions, dress appropriately and ask before photographing people or religious activities. A cultural visit can be meaningful without trying to attend a teaching or enter areas reserved for practitioners.
If you have energy and suitable conditions, add a Bhagsu outing or plan a separate Dharamkot visit. Avoid turning the first day into a race between every viewpoint. Check steps, route surfaces and the return journey before setting off, especially if you have just arrived after a long transfer.
Take a meal break and use the afternoon to arrange the next day’s activity. Confirm start times, transport, equipment and weather-dependent alternatives with your guide. Our café and Dharamshala guides can help you compare options while keeping the day relaxed.
Some short routes are walkable, but slopes, steps and winding roads matter. Use transport where it makes the day more comfortable.
