Thamsar Pass Trek

About Indrahar Pass :

The Thamsar Pass Trek is one of the most exhilarating high-altitude journeys in Himachal Pradesh, offering a perfect combination of natural beauty, cultural encounters, and true Himalayan adventure. Situated at an altitude of approximately 4,700 meters (15,420 ft), the pass acts as a dramatic gateway between the picturesque Kangra Valley and the remote, untouched Bara Bhangal Valley.

Unlike more commercial treks, Thamsar Pass remains relatively unexplored, which makes it a dream destination for trekkers seeking solitude and raw Himalayan wilderness. The trail weaves through dense deodar, oak, and pine forests, gradually opening up into vast alpine meadows dotted with wildflowers in the summer months. As you ascend higher, the scenery transforms into a stark yet striking landscape of glacial lakes, boulder-strewn ridges, and permanent snowfields that test both endurance and spirit.

The trek is not only about breathtaking landscapes but also about experiencing the unique cultural essence of Himachal. Along the way, trekkers pass through shepherd hamlets and traditional Himachali villages, where life still follows an age-old rhythm. The warm hospitality of the Gaddi shepherds, who migrate with their flocks across high passes, offers an authentic glimpse into a lifestyle deeply connected with the mountains.

From the summit of Thamsar Pass, the panorama is simply unforgettable—the mighty Dhauladhar and Pir Panjal ranges stretch endlessly across the horizon, their snow-clad peaks glistening in the sunlight. Looking down, the contrasting beauty of the lush Kangra Valley and the rugged isolation of Bara Bhangal unfolds before your eyes, making it one of the most dramatic vantage points in the entire region.

For adventure seekers, the Thamsar Pass trek is not just a physical challenge but a spiritual journey through landscapes that remain untouched by mass tourism. It offers the chance to disconnect from the modern world and immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of the Himalayas.

Day Basis Itinerary:-

  • Day 1: McLeod Ganj to Bir – Billing (89 km / 2,600 m)

Your adventure begins with a scenic drive from McLeod Ganj to Bir, a charming town that once served as the capital of Bara Bhangal. From Bir, a 14 km jeep track leads to Billing (2,600 m), one of the world’s most renowned destinations for paragliding and hang-gliding. Billing is blessed with beautiful alpine meadows and offers sweeping views of the Kangra Valley and the Shivalik ranges. After a relaxing evening enjoying the highland scenery, settle into your tents for an overnight stay.

  • Day 2: Billing to Rajgunda (2,600 m)

Today’s trek is relatively easy and takes around 4–5 hours. The trail moves north of Billing along a ridge above the Uhl River, surrounded by lush greenery and fresh mountain air. During summer, you may meet Gaddi shepherds moving with their flocks along this route, a timeless tradition of the region. By late afternoon, arrive at Rajgunda village, a quaint settlement surrounded by fields and forests. Overnight stay in tents.

  • Day 3: Rajgunda to Panihardu (3,693 m) via Palachak (2,770 m) – 16 km

Start the day with a gradual trek to Palachak, a stunning campsite with rolling pastures and grazing grounds. After a short break, continue trekking through rocky terrain, snowfields, and meadows (snow is usually found in May and June, while post-monsoon the path is clearer). By evening, you’ll reach Panihardu (3,693 m), an alpine campsite with a crisp mountain atmosphere. Overnight in tents.

  • Day 4: Panihardu to Thamsar Pass (4,704 m) and back (7–8 hrs)

This is the most challenging yet rewarding day of the trek. Start early to avoid unpredictable winds and weather conditions at higher altitudes. The route climbs steadily for about 4 hours to reach the snowfield and rocky ascent that leads to Thamsar Pass (4,704 m). At the top, the views are nothing short of spectacular—glacial lakes reflecting snow peaks, dramatic vistas of the Kangra Valley, and the rugged expanse of the Ravi Valley. After spending time at the pass, descend carefully back to Panihardu for overnight stay.

  • Day 5: Panihardu to Barot via Palachak & Baragraon (28 km)

After breakfast, retrace the route down to Palachak and onwards to Baragraon (14 km). From here, vehicles are available to Barot town (14 km), a picturesque valley settlement on the banks of the Uhl River in Mandi district. Barot, at 1,835 m, is famous for its trout fish farm, scenic landscapes, and peaceful ambiance. It is also a hub for anglers and trekkers exploring the region. Overnight stay at Barot Valley.

  • Day 6: Departure from Barot

After breakfast, begin your onward journey as per group preference—returning to Dharamshala, Manali, Chandigarh, or Pathankot. This marks the end of the adventurous Thamsar Pass Trek.
