From Kangra to Chamba

A six-day trek across the Dhauladhar Range

The Chamba Valley trek via Indrahar Pass links two sides of Himachal Pradesh’s Dhauladhar mountains. Starting near McLeod Ganj, the route climbs through Leta, Triund and the Laka camping area before reaching the high pass. Beyond the ridge, the landscape changes to mountain pastures, forest paths and the villages of the Chamba region.

This is a substantial journey for trekkers who want more than a short hill walk. The pass day combines a sustained climb with a demanding descent, while later stages bring long days on uneven trails. Local guidance, realistic pacing and flexibility are essential parts of the experience.

Manu Adventures India’s published itinerary runs for five nights and six days, finishing at Bharmour. The package includes trekking support, vegetarian meals and camping equipment. Share your dates and walking experience so the team can assess the route and departure options with you.

Choose the right route for your trip

This is a crossover into Chamba. If you prefer an itinerary that returns to the Dharamshala side, compare our Indrahar Pass trek before booking.

Five nights in the mountains

Chamba Valley trek: 6-day itinerary

1

Day 1: McLeod Ganj / Bhagsu Nag to Leta

Meet your guide at the Manu Adventures India office in Bhagsu Nag after breakfast. Walk through Upper Bhagsu towards the waterfall, then climb the steeper trail to Leta. Stops depend on the day’s pace and conditions. Settle into camp and take a short local walk if your guide recommends it. Dinner and overnight in tents at Leta.

2

Day 2: Leta to Laka via Triund

Continue uphill towards Triund, where the ridge opens onto the Dhauladhar mountains. Follow the route through Snowline and Ilaqa Got towards the Laka camping area, around 3,200 m. The published walking estimate is 4–5 hours, with timing affected by the trail and group pace. Dinner and overnight at camp. Snow around Laka is seasonal.

3

Day 3: Laka to Chata Parao via Indrahar Pass

Start early for the hardest stage. Climb towards Lahesh Cave and the steep, rocky approach to Indrahar Pass, approximately 4,350 m. Snow, ice and visibility can affect the crossing. After the pass, descend carefully into the Chamba side towards Chata Parao, around 3,700 m. The published stage distance is approximately 12 km. Dinner and overnight at camp.

4

Day 4: Chata Parao to Kwarsi

Descend towards Chata Nullah, then continue through pastures and pine forest to Kwarsi village. Stream crossings and trail conditions require the guide’s assessment. This is a long walking day, with an indicative distance of 14 km. Overnight in Kwarsi; the team will confirm the village accommodation arrangement before departure.

5

Day 5: Kwarsi to Siur

Follow forest trails through the Hilling and Lamu area towards the road head. Narrow sections call for careful footing. Continue along the agreed route towards the Ravi River crossing and Siur village. The published itinerary lists approximately 18 km for this stage; walking and road sections will be confirmed in your departure plan. Dinner and overnight in tents.

6

Day 6: Siur to Bharmour

Finish with the village trail towards Bharmour, with approximately 9 km listed in the itinerary and around three hours of walking under suitable conditions. The trek concludes at Bharmour. Arrange onward travel separately unless your written quote includes it; allow flexibility for road conditions and itinerary changes.

Plan for mountain conditions

Snow, rain, stream levels and trail access may change the itinerary. The trek leader decides whether the pass crossing is suitable. Camps, timings and stops may be adjusted, and reaching the pass is not guaranteed.

Prepare for your Chamba Valley trek

Difficulty and fitness

The package is graded moderate to difficult. Prior mountain-walking experience and fitness for repeated full days on foot are strongly recommended. Prepare for steep uphill sections, loose or uneven ground and a long descent after the pass. Tell the team about your experience before choosing this itinerary.

Season and trail access

The published season generally runs from May to October, with May–June and September–October often considered for departures. Early-season snow, monsoon rain and later cold weather can affect access. Ask the local team for current conditions rather than relying on a calendar alone.

What to pack

  • Broken-in trekking boots with dependable grip and comfortable socks
  • Warm layers, waterproof outerwear, gloves and a warm hat
  • A suitable backpack and protection for your belongings in rain
  • Reusable water bottles, sun protection and sunglasses
  • A head torch with spare batteries and a power bank
  • Personal medicines and essentials, packed for the full trip
  • Trekking poles if you use them, cash and a bag to carry your litter back

Ask for the departure packing list and confirm what you carry yourself, what the support team carries and any baggage limits. Do not expect electricity at camps or reliable mobile coverage along the route.

Arrival and onward travel

Reach the Bhagsu Nag meeting point near McLeod Ganj before the confirmed start time. Allow time for the team’s briefing and any pre-trek arrangements. The trek ends at Bharmour rather than back at the starting point. Discuss road transfers and leave room for itinerary changes when planning your return journey.

For directions and logistics, contact our Dharamshala team. Flights, buses, hotels and transfers should be booked against your confirmed trek plan.

Group size, price and departures

The advertised minimum group is four, and the price is on request. Private dates and smaller groups can enquire about options. Departure availability depends on group arrangements, weather and access; no fixed weekend departure is assumed until the team confirms it.

Remote trekking and responsible travel

Discuss altitude, acclimatisation, emergency communication and evacuation arrangements before departure. Check that your insurance covers the itinerary’s altitude and activities. Follow your guide, report feeling unwell promptly, respect villages and wildlife, and carry all waste back.
