Hampta Pass Trek
Package from Manali
Walk from wooded valleys and alpine meadows into the rugged mountains of Lahaul. This five-day Hampta Pass Trek follows the Jobra–Chatru route, with four tent nights and an optional Chandratal Lake excursion.

A five-day mountain crossing
Hampta Pass Trek: from Kullu’s greenery to Lahaul
The Hampta Pass Trek package starts in Manali, with a road transfer to Jobra before the walking begins. The trail follows the valley through Chika and Balu Ka Ghera, climbs to the pass and descends towards Shea Goru and Chatru. It is the contrast between the two sides of the mountains that gives this journey its character.
On the Kullu side, forest and meadows frame the approach. Beyond the pass, rocky slopes and open valleys lead into Lahaul. Four nights in tents put you close to the landscape, while the return drive completes the journey back to Manali.
Hampta Pass Trek highlights
- A crossover route with a different landscape on each side of the pass.
- Woodland, alpine meadows and mountain-stream scenery on the approach.
- A high pass at approximately 14,100 feet, reached only when conditions allow.
- Four scheduled tent nights along the route.
- An optional Chandratal Lake road excursion from Chatru, subject to confirmation.

Your route, day by day
Hampta Pass Trek itinerary: 5 days & 4 nights
This is the published Manali-to-Manali programme. Campsites, walking times and road journeys remain subject to trail conditions and the leader’s decisions. Confirm your arrival plan and any preparation time in Manali before the trek starts.
Manali → Jobra → Chika
Drive to the trailhead · Forest walk · First tent night
Meet at the agreed point in Manali and drive to Jobra. Begin walking through woodland and open ground beside the valley stream, then settle into the Chika campsite. This is the first stage of the ascent, so take the pace agreed with your trek leader.
The original programme lists packed lunch and dinner, with an overnight stay in tents. Confirm the meeting time, transfer arrangements and equipment before departure.
Chika → Balu Ka Ghera
Alpine meadows · Rocky sections · Second tent night
After breakfast, continue up the valley towards Balu Ka Ghera. The landscape opens into meadows and stony ground as you gain height. Stream crossings may be needed depending on conditions; follow the leader’s instructions and keep the group together.
Settle into camp for the second night. Meals are listed in the existing itinerary. The precise campsite and walking time may change with access, weather and the group’s pace.
Balu Ka Ghera → Hampta Pass → Shea Goru
Approx. 14,100 ft pass · Longest and hardest day · Third tent night
Start early for the climb towards Hampta Pass. The ascent can involve steep, rocky or snowy ground, followed by a substantial descent into the Lahaul side of the mountains. This is the most demanding stage of the programme, with the original itinerary allowing around eight to nine hours.
Continue towards the Shea Goru campsite for the third tent night. The leader decides whether conditions allow the crossing and may alter the plan. Meals are listed at camp.
Shea Goru → Chatru; optional Chandratal visit
Descent to the road · Lake excursion only if confirmed · Fourth tent night
Descend through the rocky valley towards Chatru, also spelled Chhatru. Keep time and energy for uneven paths and possible stream crossings. The change from the greener Kullu side to the open, rugged Lahaul landscape is a defining feature of this route.
If the road is open and arrangements allow, an optional vehicle excursion can take you towards Chandratal Lake. Confirm its price and transport in advance. The standard itinerary returns to Chatru for the fourth tent night; it does not promise camping beside the lake.
Chatru → Manali
Return road journey · Breakfast · Trek ends
After breakfast, take the arranged return drive to Manali. The route and timing depend on road access and the operator’s plan; a Rohtang Pass drive is not guaranteed. Confirm the expected drop-off time before making onward reservations.
Keep a generous buffer for delays on mountain roads. An extra night in Manali may make onward travel easier and needs a separate arrangement.

Prepare for the mountain days
Best time, difficulty & travel planning
Best time for the Hampta Pass Trek
The usual planning window is mid-June to September. Early-season snow can affect the pass, summer rain can disrupt paths and roads, and later dates bring colder nights. The trail and Chandratal road do not necessarily open together. Confirm current access and departure availability before making other reservations.
Difficulty and who the trek suits
The itinerary grades the trek as moderate, with a demanding pass day. Expect sustained uphill walking, steep descents, uneven ground and possible snow or stream crossings. Camping and altitude add to the effort. First-time trekkers should prepare well and discuss their experience with the team rather than treating this as an easy walk.
Build up your walking stamina before travel and arrive according to the agreed preparation plan. Share any relevant health or mobility needs so the team can assess suitability. Follow the leader’s route and turnaround decisions throughout the trek.
Reaching Manali
Arrange your journey to Manali before the confirmed meeting time. Delhi and Chandigarh are common road connections; Bhuntar is the regional airport with an onward road journey. Check current services, boarding points and timings with the operator. Keep spare time around the return journey because mountain roads can be delayed.
Chandratal is an optional excursion
The lake visit is a road trip after the trek reaches Chatru, rather than part of the walking distance. It needs an accessible road, enough time and agreed vehicle arrangements. The standard fourth night is at Chatru. Follow local access and conservation rules; the package does not promise lakeside camping.
For a broader holiday with separate activities, see our Himachal adventure tour. Speak to the team about extra days instead of squeezing additional sightseeing into the pass-crossing programme.

How long is the Hampta Pass Trek package?

Is Chandratal Lake included in the Hampta Pass Trek?
The existing itinerary lists Chandratal as an optional road excursion from Chatru on Day 4. It depends on road access, weather and available time. Ask whether the vehicle and visit are included in your quoted price; the lake visit is not guaranteed. The scheduled fourth night is at Chatru.
What is the Hampta Pass Trek height?
The itinerary lists the pass at approximately 14,100 feet, or about 4,300 metres. Altitude figures vary slightly between maps and route descriptions. This is a high-altitude trek, so prepare for the ascent and discuss the acclimatisation plan with the team.
How difficult is the trek, and can beginners join?
The page grades the trek as moderate, but the pass-crossing day is demanding. Expect steep climbs, a long descent, uneven ground and possible snow or stream crossings. A well-prepared first-time trekker can enquire; suitability depends on fitness, conditions and the team’s assessment.
What is the usual Hampta Pass trekking season?
The usual planning window is mid-June to September. Snow can affect early-season access; rain and road disruption can affect summer trips; late-season nights can be cold. Departures depend on current conditions and local access, so confirm your dates before booking transport.
What is the Hampta Pass Trek distance?
The original programme gives an approximate total walking distance of 35 kilometres. Campsite positions, diversions and track conditions can change that figure. It excludes the road journeys to Jobra, any Chandratal excursion and the return to Manali.
How much does the Hampta Pass Trek cost?
The price is on request. The quote depends on dates, group size, transport, equipment, meal coverage and any optional Chandratal visit. The standard page lists a minimum of two participants; no fixed discount or guaranteed daily departure is advertised.
Where do we stay, and which meals are covered?
The itinerary lists four tent nights at Chika, Balu Ka Ghera, Shea Goru and Chatru. Day 1 lists packed lunch and dinner; Days 2–4 list meals at camp; Day 5 lists breakfast. Confirm tent sharing, sleeping equipment and the detailed meal plan in your written quote.
How do I reach the starting point in Manali?

What equipment should I bring?
Bring broken-in trekking shoes, warm layers, waterproof outerwear, spare socks, sun protection, a head torch, water bottles and a rain-protected backpack. Ask which tents, sleeping bags, mats and other shared equipment the operator provides before buying or packing camping gear.
Can solo travellers or private groups enquire?
Yes, you can ask about joining an available group or arranging a private departure. The published minimum is two participants. Group availability, single-person arrangements and any extra charges need confirmation; submitting an enquiry does not reserve a departure.
