A forest climb to Thatharana’s mountain meadows

The Thatharana Trek begins around Kharota, on the Khaniyara side of Dharamshala. The route climbs through woodland before opening to mountain and valley views. It offers a different approach to the Dhauladhar foothills from the better-known Triund trail.

Our two-day programme leaves time for the ascent, a night at the agreed campsite and the return walk. The landscape and experience change with the season: clear weather brings broad views, while cloud, rain or snow can affect both the trail and camp arrangements.

What to look forward to

  • A guided forest walk from Kharota village.
  • Changing views of the Kangra Valley and Dhauladhar mountains.
  • An overnight camping experience with dinner and breakfast.
  • Time to rest, take photographs and enjoy the mountain setting.
Short does not mean effortless. The route includes a steady uphill climb, uneven sections and a substantial descent. Share your walking experience so the team can discuss a suitable pace.

A night in the mountains

Thatharana Trek itinerary: 2 days, 1 night

The trek starts and finishes at the agreed Kharota meeting point. Confirm your arrival time, any transfer and the exact walking stages before departure.

Day 01 · Climb and camp

Kharota village to Thatharana

Meet your guide at Kharota for the route briefing and equipment check. Walk uphill through forest at a steady pace, with rest stops along the way. Expect several hours of ascent rather than a fixed arrival time. Reach the selected campsite, settle into your tent and enjoy the mountain setting. Dinner and overnight camping are included in the published arrangement.

Day 02 · Breakfast and descent

Thatharana to Kharota village

Have breakfast at camp and prepare for the return walk. Descend carefully through the forest to Kharota, allowing time for uneven or slippery sections. The trek finishes at the agreed trailhead. Any onward vehicle or Dharamshala hotel arrangement should be confirmed separately.

Views and walking times depend on conditions. The guide may adjust the route, rest stops or camp plan when weather or access changes. Bonfires and snow experiences are not guaranteed.

Arrive ready for the trail

Distance, season and practical preparation

Route and walking effort

Plan for roughly 10–14 km out and back, depending on the starting point and campsite. The route climbs steadily before the return descent. Treat it as an active mountain walk and allow flexibility in the daily timing.

The upper camping area is around 2,700 metres. Confirm the precise camp and walking stages when booking.

Choose the right season

Spring and autumn are usual planning seasons for this route. Rain can make the ground slippery, and winter conditions can change access and equipment needs. Ask about current trail and camp conditions before arranging travel.

The winter images in the gallery show seasonal scenes; they do not guarantee snow on your departure.

Getting there and packing

Reach Dharamshala by your chosen road, rail connection or flight to Kangra Airport, then arrange the Kharota transfer separately. Confirm the meeting location and start time with the team.

Bring trekking shoes with good grip, warm layers, rain protection, water, snacks, a headtorch and personal essentials. Request the final kit list and keep litter off the trail.
